Comfortable socks not too thick nor too thin
Forget the AX4 get the R3.

these are proper all terrain running shoes. in the terrex family i first bought the ax4 having ,read no negative reviews and they are a bit cheaper than these r3 but the difference between is night and day. ax4 and r3 serve different purpose, ax4 for the flat r3 for all shape of terrains. they both have the excellent goodyear sole, the lugs present different shapes but provide the most insane grip on both, only the r3 has an extra protection plate at the front. durability... goodyear seems to be on par with vibram, better than contagrip but on the long haul i have no illusion, the lugs will eventually vanish. that's where the comparison stops between ax4 and r3. so where does the r3 outclass the ax4? everything else. the midsole is typical terrex shape only with the additional hard shells on each side (the so called promoderator) and at the back. the top shell of the r3 is a mix of breathable mesh and silicone. together they provide a lot of tightness which is paramount on a shoe that has so much grip. on the ax4 it is all mesh, no hard shells and no silicon stripes, so when the terrain is uneven, you can squeeze your shoelace all you want your feet is going to slide dangerously. the ax4 felt like wearing jandals, on the flat for your casual run and sports session it is good enough, on a slope it is a nightmare especially downhill. the r3 in comparison really make the shoe and your foot one part. the silicon is actually harder than usual, flexible enough to wrap around but hard enough to prevent lateral movements. some say the terrex models size too small, they felt tight at first but eventually they will stretch to fit your feet shape. i bought my exact size, i had the same feeling at the start thinking i should have gone one size above but at the end i have made the right choice. one thing i am little less impress with is quality control of the sole gluing. my ax4 are super tightly glued, the r3 are a bit uneven, there are a couple of tight gaps around the heel where i felt the sole and midsole should have been pressed harder. overall, it quite a unique shoe on the market built for durability before all. i have wasted so many shoes from all brands i had to give these a go. i use them for running in all terrains in humid conditions (new zealand) under scorching sunrays (thinner ozone) in summer and very heavy rains in winter. terrain is rocks, sharp gravels, mud, volcanic sand, and usually very steep. distance anywhere between 10 and 20ks every weekend. note that i only use the r3 for rough and uneven steep terrains. i bought them in combination with the salomon trail low which is a protection that wraps around the trainer to prevent debris from getting inside your shoes. like a short gaiter basically. it fits absolutely perfectly with the terrex due to the angular shape of the midsole. overall the r3 is one of the best all terrain running shoe i have had if you don't mind a bit of extra weight, the hyper rigidity of the sole and midsole combination (if you like flexible this trainer is not for you). the lacing system is not the best but it is better on the r3 than ax4, this system repartition though makes sense considering the silicone stripes, it works together and ensure these stripes wrap your feet and lock them in place. if like me you destroy your trainers faster than you have an hot meal, these r3 should last you a bit longer than anything else on the market. are they proper running shoes? not if you are into your marathon light on your feet, they are more on the hiking side but if you're on the heavy side, soldier on type of runner not caring about what you are running into and will stop to nothing the r3 will surprise you. in my case the rigidity and grip allows me to run with a lighter technique, i can run more on the tip of the shoe than i would normally do. they are a treat running uphill, downhill, sidehill. 5 stars for me.
